Reducing Scope 3 Emissions with Ainscough

Across the UK, companies are striving to meet net-zero goals and reduce their carbon footprints. For industries reliant on heavy equipment and logistics, addressing Scope 3 emissions can be challenging. At Ainscough, we’re helping our clients navigate these challenges to improve the efficiency and sustainability of their projects.

What are Scope 3 emissions?

Put simply, Scope 3 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that occur throughout a company’s value chain. Unlike Scope 1 which are direct emissions from owned sources e.g. emissions from furnaces you own, and Scope 2 which are emissions from purchased energy e.g. electric from a source you don’t control such as a power station, Scope 3 encompasses a wide range of activities. These include emissions from suppliers, transportation, waste disposal, etc.

In the UK, Scope 3 emissions reporting is guided by frameworks such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, in alignment with the Government’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2050. UK Companies are being encouraged to measure, manage, and reduce these emissions as part of their broader sustainability strategies.

For companies who must report under the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting Scheme (SECR) guidelines, i.e. those listed on the stock exchange, LLPs and companies that qualify as ‘large’ (using the Companies Act definition). Reporting Scope 3 emissions is mainly voluntary; however, they are highly encouraged to do so.

For construction and infrastructure projects, Scope 3 emissions often account for a majority of the total emissions, making it key to choose partners who can help to reduce impact.

By addressing Scope 3 emissions, companies can:

  • Meet net-zero regulations and standards
  • Improve their reputation
  • Appeal to environmentally conscious clients
  • Contribute to net zero efforts

How we can provide support

At Ainscough, we understand the various pressures faced by our clients. By choosing Ainscough, businesses can reduce Scope 3 emissions in several ways.

  • Innovative, efficient fleet

By investing in fuel-efficient equipment and adhering to thorough maintenance schedules, we ensure that our fleet operates with maximum efficiency and minimal emissions. Additionally, since 2022 we have transitioned to using HVO fuel instead of traditional diesel across our entire fleet. HVO is a renewable fuel that significantly reduces carbon emissions and particulate matter, making every project cleaner and greener. Alongside the use of HVO, we have also invested in hybrid cranes which use cleaner electric while onsite.

  • Customer Portal

As part of our commitment to sustainability and customer support, Ainscough provides a portal where, among many other features, clients can track the emissions from their crane hire or contract lift. This tool offers detailed insight into the emissions of each lift, from depot – to site – and back. The data highlights the carbon savings achieved through use of our HVO-powered fleet compared to the traditional diesel.

  • Expert planning reduces resource use

With decades of experience, our team meticulously plan each lift to optimise operations. This includes minimising reducing idle times and ensuring efficient logistics. Through streamlining processes, we can eliminate unnecessary fuel consumption and the associated emissions.

  • Commitment to sustainability

Ainscough is committed to reducing its own carbon footprint and are a Scope 1 and  2 Carbon Neutral verified business. Through initiatives such as transitioning to alternative fuels like HVO, investing in hybrid cranes, and working with suppliers who share our sustainability goals, we’re actively reducing emissions across our operations. When you partner with Ainscough for your projects, you’re choosing a company aligned with your environmental objectives.
