Back in 2022 we caught up with Marcus Leyshon, who was then eighteen months into his Ainscough career as an apprentice Digital Design Engineer. We’ve now spoken to Marcus again to find out how his career has developed and what his future plans are.
Since I first took part in My Ainscough Story I’ve risen through the ranks and am now a Planning and Design Technician, where I work as part of the Heavy Cranes division. I completed my apprenticeship on time last year and graduated with a BTEC Level 3 in Construction and Built Environment and passed my Digital Engineering and Technicians Level 3 course.
The crane industry was never discussed as an option when I was at school, and it can feel like you’re being pushed towards university rather than learning a trade. I know if I’d known about Ainscough back then I’d have joined as soon as I could, and I’d definitely be keen to go into schools to talk about my experiences at this great company.
Helping others is a major part of the culture here at Ainscough. I’m not the new kid on the block anymore, and I use my experience to support my colleagues when I can. I’ve a colleague who knew nothing about cranes when he joined, my manager and I did our best to show him the ropes and two years on he’s doing really well. I enjoy producing 3D Lift Plans when it is required on the more intricate jobs and I’m always happy to demonstrate to colleagues how this side of things works.
I’m keen to pass on what I know to others as I feel I’ve benefited so much from the knowledge of those around me. I’m incredibly lucky to be in the office in Ossett, soaking up all the knowledge of the more experienced guys. My Manager Andrew Clark especially, really knows his cranes! They’re good at getting the younger team members involved, and with these great colleagues in my corner I know there’s nothing to stop me from progressing.
Regarding specific jobs, recently I have been heavily involved in a job on the M25 for Laing O’Rourke. This involved two LTM1750-9.1 cranes, installing 22 w-bridge beams. My role was to produce level checks at working positions for each crane. This was an incredibly important process to make sure the cranes can get level and begin to work safely. This was another fantastic and successful lifting operation by team Ainscough.
There are so many other jobs I’m proud of working on – from Tower crane installations, transformer lifts and bridge work. My role also involves supporting the wider business and customers with technical queries, producing lift plans and providing training to my colleagues.
Outside of work, I have a one-year-old son who keeps me on my toes! My plan for the next few years is to continue to work hard towards becoming an Appointed Person, never miss a chance to learn from my amazing colleagues and see where my career at this brilliant company takes me.
